Every producer usually started out with just a crappy laptop or desktop computer. It doesn’t really matter at first as long as we’re making the most of those crappy computers to progress and improve in our musical journey. As we get more professional and apply complex process in our music writing process, I think it’s about the time we should invest in some gears to help us to make music better as music producers.
In this article, we are going to discuss the 5 hardware gears you should consider investing in if you are really serious about making music.
1. Acoustic Treatment
In my opinion, I can say that acoustic treatment is the best to invest in if you want to upgrade your bedroom studio. This is because acoustic treatments allow you to mix and master more clearly as they turn your room into a natural environment for sounds. You need them to ensure that you are mixing your song accurately by preventing reflections of sound in your bedroom studio. You also have the chance to have professional quality recordings with unwanted reverbs. It can be costly to do acoustic treatment to your room but you definitely won’t regret doing it.
2. Studio Monitors
Studio monitors are loudspeakers mainly designed for professional audio production applications, such as recording studios, filmmaking, television studios, radio studios and project or home studios, where accurate audio reproduction is crucial. They will provide you a better representation of how your music sound on other kinds of audio systems if you have acoustic treatment in your room and the proper monitors. Remember to buy monitor pads to separate them from your desk for a better frequency response.
3. Audio Interface
An audio interface is a piece of hardware that expands and improves the sonic capabilities of a computer. Some audio interfaces give you the ability to connect professional microphones, instruments and other kinds of signals to a computer, and output a variety of signals as well. If you’re a recording artist, you probably need to invest in a top quality audio interface as you’ll do a lot of recording in your music making sessions. On top of that, audio interfaces generally feature higher audio quality than standard onboard sound cards in your computers.
4. Studio Headphones
Studio headphones are a pair of small listening devices that are designed to be worn on or around the head over a music producer's ears for music production purposes. A good pair of studio headphones is a must for any producer making music in their own home studio, especially when the studio is closely surrounded by other rooms and buildings. If you really can’t afford acoustic treatment and studio monitors, a pair of studio headphones is probably the best solution for you to mix accurately.
5. MIDI Keyboard/Controller
A MIDI keyboard is typically a piano-style user interface keyboard device used for sending MIDI signals or commands over a USB or MIDI cable to other devices connected and operating on the same MIDI protocol interface. They allow you to produce at a higher rate because you can jam out a new catchy melody on your MIDI keyboard instead of writing them one by one in the piano roll. If you’re a classically trained musician, then you should not miss on this hardware gear.
