The challenges of an upcoming producer: Drops

Yep,we are finally talking about DROPS... How does one make kick ass DROPS that will not only Blow the Listener's mind but also shave their heads bald with absolute power? Let's Break it down.

The first thing is to recognise and acknowledge the fact that there are different Genres, with different specifications tailor-made for the Genre and further more, this difference crystallize mostly at THE DROP, so I will be discussing the Fundemental properties of each Genre (the mainstream ones of course).

1. Progressive House and Melodic Bigroom Drops.

Why did I choose to categorize these two together? Because truth be told sometimes the only difference between these genre drops is Who made them. The Basics are all, but similar.

The Melody

We have gone over this, NO MELODY NO SONG... BORING MELODY BORING SONG.

The melody is the catchy heard mostly at the top of the whole track... Build up of saw, supersaws and tailor-made sounds for uniqueness...

So how does one build a saw? The fundemental to building either a saw or a supersaw in every plugin or instrument is... a saw wave of course... There are countless tutorials on how to build an amphemic supersaw on the internet but as always I like to refer to the professionals (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vgkoU7jFTbI)

But W. A. Productions were not to be outdone now were We? Here is superman Roman doing it better than a pro with two synths, Sylenth 1 and Spire and he also explains more on the Chords... double the fun right? All hail the Redhead, lol. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vgkoU7jFTbI)

Chords

Chords are also important as to fill up the whole spectrum and make the whole drop powerful and energetic... Usually Pianos and more Saws are used to make the chords... The difference herein being in EQ-ng and separating the saws in the melody with the saws at the middle... For more information on this please refer back to the instrument selection part of the series.

Mid-bass

This is THE secret to a progressive and melodic bigroom Drop, without a proper Midbass the track is most likely mediocre and lacklustre.

So how can You make a good Midbass? Well truth is, it depends on the track, the midbass has to be catchy on it's own and with the whole track and not fight the track... As the name suggests, it should have Mid and Basic characters... Soo it's a bass that supports the Mids and the Bass, here is an example (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VP2LUr__2MQ) A lot of amazingly good Presets are available to choose from, all thanks to the W. A. Productions progressive house Sample packs, so go ahead and try them.

2. Bigroom

Kick

The reason I didn't talk about The kick and perhaps subbasses above on the progressive house section is because, generally the kick used is the normal balanced kick drum with no specific characters but only those that make it punchy and stand out in the mix.

With Bigroom however and here I am referring to the percussion drop Bigroom and Electric drop too (Like Hardwell and others)... The real secret is the Kick or the Subkick at that.

The kick structure is the typical 4 to the floor mostly but the type of kick is a very heavy taily kick, here is an example of what I am talking about.

Kick 1

Kick 2

As one can see structurally, the Bigroom Kick is very Big and so is the sound... Finding the right Kick can either make or Break the track in this case... As the Kick really is the Energy give of the track... Use the wrong kick,You are giving out the wrong energy and the track is dead, W. A. productions have a bunch upon bunch of Very Good Kicks... and other samples... Try them out. You won't regret it.

Percussion or Electric lead

The Percussion or lead is the high end of the Drop in this case and acts as a melody but with a flavour of either the percussion or the Electric lead... Usually a lot of Reverb is applied to give the percussion live and a catchy bounce melody is produced... Remember Animals? Yeah..

Huge snares

I used Huge because those Pryda Snares really are... while in Progressive house, usually at the semi-pause Fills are used, in Bigroom it's the Pryda snare... It is used to add diversity and ooomph to the track... usually 2 or more different sounding snares are used.

3. DUBSTEP

Wobble Bass

A wobble Bass is that sound that sounds like a really distorted voice in the Dubstep drop... and the likes of Skrillex have famously produced it with native plugins like Sytrus and Harmor, here is an example of how (http://youtube.com/watch?v=UEBe6lkMEbk)

Dirty Saw

A dirty saw is also used to contribute to the overall feel of the Dubstep Drop, with Supersaws and other elements of the producer's choice... http://youtube.com/watch?v=CkRLDhH0oIU

http://youtube.com/watch?v=xotRKGPATkw

Kick and Snare

Dubstep (not specifically the drop )usually uses a very punch kick with a short attack and decay and a very metally snare with sharp attack and a long decay... Listen to You favourite Dubstep track, hear that?

4. Tropical or Deep House

The overall trick is Mostly The Chilled feel of The CHORDS,the Short Punchy Kick and the very variant yet catchy top melody, made out of very short and flutey synths.

For example,on a Full Bar Chord, usually quarter notes are use to vary around the melody and increase overall uniqueness (https://youtu.be/oR4KoQOxMr8)

5. Future House and European Deep (Garage) House

The secret here is the Bass.which is usually a pulse wave bass build on a seventh chord, here are some examples (http://youtube.com/watch?v=R8VvaJ9uYo8,

But once again W. A. Productions have already made a producer's life easier,so just check them out,use their samples to save You Precious Time with which You could be making life changing Melodies and get creative.

Thank you for reading!
